Ocean, fresh water, or land?
Turtle Habitat Challenge
Read the feet, food, shell, and behavior clues. Then place each mystery turtle in the habitat that fits.

Mystery turtle: The long-distance swimmer
“I have a streamlined body and long front flippers that carry me across huge distances.”
Guide the turtle to its best home:
How adaptations leave clues
Flippers reduce drag in the ocean, webbed feet help many freshwater turtles paddle, and sturdy legs support tortoises on land. Real animals have plenty of exceptions, but close observation is a strong place to begin.

Turtle habitats and adaptation clues
Play the challenge first, then use this guide to revisit all 12 mystery turtles and the clues that reveal where they belong.
1.The long-distance swimmer
“I have a streamlined body and long front flippers that carry me across huge distances.”
Habitat: ocean
Sea turtles use powerful flippers and streamlined shells to travel through open water.
2.The pond paddler
“I have webbed feet, swim among water plants, and climb onto logs to bask.”
Habitat: freshwater
Webbed feet work well for turtles that split their time between ponds or rivers and the shore.
3.The desert walker
“I have sturdy, elephant-like feet and dig a burrow to escape the hottest part of the day.”
Habitat: land
Land-dwelling tortoises have strong legs for walking and digging rather than flippers for swimming.
4.The jellyfish hunter
“I cross deep water looking for soft, drifting prey and can dive farther than any other turtle.”
Habitat: ocean
Leatherback sea turtles roam the open ocean and are specially adapted to eat jellyfish.
5.The muddy ambusher
“I wait along the bottom of a pond or slow river, using the water and mud as cover.”
Habitat: freshwater
Many snapping turtles live in fresh water such as ponds, lakes, marshes, and slow-moving rivers.
6.The grassland grazer
“I spend my day walking over dry ground and grazing on grasses and leafy plants.”
Habitat: land
Many tortoises live entirely on land and eat a mostly plant-based diet.
7.The nesting traveler
“I live almost my whole life in salt water, but an adult female visits a sandy beach to lay eggs.”
Habitat: ocean
Sea turtles live at sea, although females come ashore when it is time to nest.
8.The creek sprinter
“My flat shell and webbed feet help me dart through rivers and streams.”
Habitat: freshwater
Freshwater softshell turtles have flattened, flexible shells that reduce drag in moving water.
9.The island giant
“I carry a tall, domed shell and spend decades roaming dry islands on thick legs.”
Habitat: land
Giant tortoises are land animals with sturdy legs and can live for well over a century.
10.The sea-grass mower
“As an adult, I cruise warm coastal water and graze on sea grass and algae.”
Habitat: ocean
Adult green sea turtles mainly graze in marine habitats where sea grasses and algae grow.
11.The hinged hideaway
“I wander through damp forests and can close my hinged shell tightly when danger appears.”
Habitat: land
Eastern box turtles spend most of their lives on land, often in forests and meadows.
12.The sunny slider
“I swim in lakes and ponds, then pile onto rocks or logs to warm myself in the sun.”
Habitat: freshwater
Sliders and many other freshwater turtles regularly leave the water to bask.
